Lillipods NorthStar

A fresh approach to preschool, close to home

Lillipods NorthStar is a small, caring preschool at Northstar@AMK, within easy reach of Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon North, Hougang, Buangkok, Fernvale and Yio Chu Kang.

Here, children take an active role in learning as teachers guide each experience with clear purpose. Through purposeful play, inquiry, bilingual learning and warm daily routines, they grow in curiosity, confidence and independence.

A small school where every child is known

In our smaller school setting, teachers build close relationships with children and families, taking time to understand each child’s strengths, needs and stage of development.

This sense of security gives children the confidence to take part, form friendships and become more independent.

How children learn at NorthStar

Learning begins in many ways: a child’s question, a story, a song, an object from nature or an idea introduced by a teacher.

Children may count and measure while preparing food, explore balance while building a tower, investigate how plants grow, or retell a story through role-play. Each experience connects purposeful play with clear learning goals.

Our teachers demonstrate, question, observe and guide. They give children space to test ideas and solve problems, then step in with direction, modelling or focused practice when support is needed.

As children grow, learning becomes more structured through teacher-led lessons, literacy and numeracy activities, written work and classroom routines that prepare them for Primary 1.

Bilingual learning across the day

English and Chinese come alive through stories, songs, conversation, movement, routines and hands-on activities.

Teachers introduce and revisit words in meaningful situations, helping children understand what they hear and express their own ideas. A numeracy activity may include counting in Chinese, a nature observation may invite description in English, and a familiar song may be enjoyed in both languages.

As children grow, they move into more focused reading and writing activities. This builds strong foundations in both languages while helping children use language to connect, think and learn.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Children learn about their community by taking part in regular outdoor experiences and local outings.

Nature walks, visits to nearby parks and neighbourhood explorations give children new things to notice, discuss and investigate. They observe plants and animals, recognise signs and numbers, practise moving safely in public spaces and become more aware of the people and places around them.

These experiences help children connect classroom learning with everyday life.

Preparing for Primary 1

We prepare children for Primary 1 by helping them develop the knowledge, confidence and habits needed to learn well in a more structured environment.

Children build:

  • strong foundations in English, Chinese and numeracy;

  • confidence in expressing ideas and asking for help;

  • the ability to listen and follow classroom routines;

  • independence in managing everyday tasks and belongings;

  • resilience when learning feels difficult;

  • problem-solving and thinking skills; and

  • the ability to work and communicate with others.

Written work and focused practice increase as children approach Primary 1, while purposeful play and inquiry keep learning active and meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ages do you welcom at NorthStar?

We welcome children from Playgroup, starting at 18 months, through to K2. Places depend on the current availability within each age group.

How do you prepare children for Primary 1?

We build foundations in English, Chinese and numeracy alongside classroom routines, communication, independence and social-emotional skills. Older children take part in more focused lessons, practice and written activities as they approach Primary 1.

Do children spend time outdoors?

Yes. Children take part in regular outdoor movement, neighbourhood experiences and age-appropriate outings. Activities are planned with suitable safety measures and staff-to-child ratios.

How do you support bilingual learning?

Children experience English and Chinese through stories, songs, conversations, routines and learning activities. Teachers introduce reading and writing progressively as children grow.

How will I know what my child is learning?

Families receive regular updates through photographs, observations and examples of learning. Parent-teacher meetings provide time to discuss what your child has tried, what they understand and what they are ready to learn next.

How is Lillipods different from a more traditional preschool?

Children at Lillipods take an active role in learning. They ask questions, explore ideas, make choices and solve problems through purposeful play and inquiry, while teachers guide each experience towards clear learning goals. As children grow, teachers introduce more structured lessons, focused practice and written work.

How do you help new children settle in?

We work with each family on a gradual settling-in plan. Early sessions may be shorter while children become familiar with their teachers, classmates and daily routines.

Are ECDA subsidies available?

Yes. Eligible families may receive ECDA childcare subsidies. During your visit, our team can explain the applicable fees and subsidies for your child’s programme.
